EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT – Frank Lu
Frank is the kind of guy who jumps in headfirst—no half-measures, no hesitation. Before Mills James, he was juggling three jobs and clocking 70-hour workweeks like it was nothing. Then came Mills James—a full-time role where he could finally focus on his true passion: video production.
Fast-forward five years, and Frank has done it all—leading productions like Fan Expo 2024 (yes, he worked with the Four Hobbits), tackling last-minute changes like a pro, and wearing more hats than we can count—Director of Photography, Event Video Engineer, IT Specialist, you name it.
So what keeps him going? What’s next on his bucket list? Let’s dive in.
How long have you been at Mills James?
I’ve been working full-time at Mills James since November 4, 2019—just over five years now!
What did your life look like before MJ?
Before Mills James, I was juggling a lot. I was a freelance photographer/videographer, a full-time financial advisor, and I worked part-time running the lottery. At one point, I was clocking 70 hours a week, seven days in a row, for nearly a year and a half!
When Mills James offered me a full-time position, I was so grateful. It gave me the chance to drop my other jobs and focus solely on what I love—video production.
What led you to a career in this industry?
I’ve always been a creative person, but not in a traditional way like drawing or painting. I’m also a huge tech enthusiast, so videography and photography became the perfect blend of creativity and technology for me. Getting to create something with both is what drew me in!
What is a project that you have worked on that sticks out to you?
2024 Fan Expo. The main event featured The Four Hobbits from The Lord of the Rings, and I was the V1 (video lead) with a freelancer handling A1 (audio). We weren’t expecting anything too crazy… but wow.
The room was completely packed—fans were stacked on the ground, aisles filled, people screaming when their favorite actors walked in. There were tons of last-minute changes, but the event went off flawlessly. Definitely one to remember!
What is your favorite part of being on the Cleveland team?
The crew, hands down. We’re a smaller team, but it honestly feels like family.
Tell us about a professional success story that you’re proud of.
When I started at MJ, I was just working weekend lottery broadcasts. Fast forward five years, and now I’m filling roles like Director of Photography, Photographer, Event Video Engineer, IT Specialist, and Project Manager.
The growth I’ve experienced has been incredible, and I’m so thankful to Mills James for giving me the tools and opportunities to expand my skill set.
Describe an interesting hobby or pastime that you have.
I’m really into tech, firearms, and cars, and I’m currently training to compete in 3 Gun competitions.
What are you looking forward to in your future?
I’m a huge action movie/show fan, so if the opportunity ever comes up to work on a high-end action shoot, I’d jump at the chance!
